Spoilt Rotten Makeup

Four Eyed Fancy

I am a glasses wearer, I used to detest that fact, now I am proud of it. Glasses have become very popular recently and I couldn’t be happier! For the first time glasses are a fashion statement and an accessory instead of a boring necessity. WooHoo! I am also lucky enough to be able to wear contact lenses, so I have the best of both worlds. This post, however, is all about makeup for spectacle-wearers!

First of all, I want you to change your attitude. Many people believe glasses are a hindrance, and get in the way of eye makeup. I was one of those people who hid behind my glasses I would only do pretty eye makeup when I wore my contacts. I now know that is ridiculous. I learned to embrace my glasses, use them as an accessory, and use them to accentuate, instead of hide, my eyes. It is just as important to put effort into your makeup when you’re wearing glasses as when you’re not wearing them.

There are hundreds of different styles of glasses and you need to know how to compliment your makeup with your frames. The bigger and bolder specs (all the rage at the moment) lend themselves to bolder makeup; thicker lines and the such. Whereas the neater, more discrete specs are best suited to subtle makeup. Either way, the most important thing to remember is to keep it simple.

I am very fond of a colorful and experimental eye, but never paired with my glasses. When I wear my glasses I keep my colours very neutral. This doesn’t mean I don’t have fun with my look, quite the opposite! I love creating depth and dimension because my glasses magnify my eyes and really draw attention to them. Nude lids with any neutral shade in the crease is my go to style. Now, although I am advising you not to use too much colour, a simple pop of colour can be super pretty and really flattering to the style of glasses you’re wearing. I like to add a colorful lower lash liner to a neutral eye, this is so simple yet the colour will open up the eyes beautifully. Try to pick colours that will compliment your eye colour, for example Brown eyes look stunning paired with lilacs and light purples, but earth tones such as taupe are also very flattering. Blue eyes are the most versatile but I believe are best with coppers and golds. Green eyes look amazing with plums and wines as well as deep browns like mocha. Bronze colours will look fab on hazel eyes. Just remember to keep the lower lash liner very neat and subtle, you want to avoid making the eye area look heavy and over done. Put the colorful liner on your upper lid if you want to keep the area under your eyes clean. If you have colorful glasses (mine are purple) keep the colour to your lips instead of your eyes.

I am a big fan of subtle black eyeliner on the upper lid. However, it is not necessary with glasses. If you do choose to use liner, keep the style of your frames in mind; the bigger the frames, and more open the lens, the thicker you can go with the liner. If you are wearing smaller frames, or even wire-rim glasses, keep the liner very thin. I also find it is helpful to line your water line with a neutral liner. This will make your eyes look brighter and really open them up, this is particularly helpful if your glasses make your eyes look smaller.

Mascara is a very important element for ladies who wear glasses. I don’t want to hear any excuses, if your lashes are super long (lucky) and brush your lenses, curl them, this will eliminate any smudging. Mascara is a must at all times.

Another important element, just as important as mascara is your eyebrows. If you know me, you know what I’m like with my brows! I am eyebrow-obsessed. Brows frame your entire face and make a huge difference when they are kept well. Brows and glasses balance each other out, it is important that your brows are as fabulous as your glasses!

What a lot of people forget when wearing glasses is the area around the eyes. Glasses of all shapes and sizes cast shadows. You need to counteract this by wearing a good under eye concealer with a setting powder. I am in love with MAC’s prep and prime highlighter, I use this to diffuse any shadows that might be cast. Sweeping a powder highlighter along your cheekbone will go a long way to brightening up the eye area around glasses.

The most important thing I want to emphasize with this post is that glasses are pretty, they can add so much to your look with the least amount of effort. I think the picture of Jennifer Aniston in her stunning frames articulates this point perfectly. Embrace your inner Aniston, and embrace your frames!
